Adeus, Diario. Día 74. “Aurelio”.
Hablaba en la newsletter numero 08 de la decisión de titular definitivamente este proyecto como Adeus. Explicaba cómo, a diferencia de un enfoque inicial más cercano al lamento por algo que se ha perdido, este proyecto intenta ser una forma de despedirme en primera persona de las ultimas generaciones que forman una cultura, un mundo al fin y al cabo, del que procede mi propia historia familiar. Éste es un proceso sin duda doloroso, pero en el que yo decido estar presente a través de la cámara porque quizás la fotografía sea en esencia eso, una manera de registrar a través de imágenes lo que uno ha vivido, lo que a uno le importa, como las marcas que dejaban en las rocas nuestros antepasados. Una manera de decir: Yo estuve aquí, una vez nosotros estuvimos vivos aquí.
I spoke in newsletter number 08 about the decision to definitively title this project Adeus. I explained how, unlike an initial approach that was closer to lamenting something that has been lost, this project is intended to be a way of saying goodbye in the first person to the last generations that form a culture, a world after all, from which my own family history originates. This is undoubtedly a painful process, but one in which I choose to be present through the camera because perhaps photography is essentially that, a way of recording through images what one has lived through, what one cares about, like the marks left on the rocks by our ancestors. A way of saying: I was here, once we were alive here.
Aurelio y Delia son sin duda una de esas marcas imborrables que este trabajo ha dejado en mí. Nos conocimos durante uno de mis primeros viajes por la comarca de O Carballiño, en abril del año 2022. El trabajo previo me permite orientarme, por eso estudio mapas, preparo rutas. Planificar me da una dirección, pero me gusta moverme siguiendo la pista a las decisiones que tomo sobre la marcha. La clave de mi fotografía, sus aciertos o descubrimientos, han surgido siempre de la mano de la intuición.
Siguiendo un camino alejado de la carretera principal, vi algo que me hizo cambiar de rumbo y emprender la búsqueda. Aparqué el coche en un lugar donde sólo se podía continuar a pie, una pequeña plaza en medio de la aldea. Cuando me bajé del coche vi a Delia asomada en la entrada de su casa, sorprendida por mi aparición en un lugar donde apenas existen las visitas.
Aurelio and Delia are undoubtedly one of those indelible marks that this work has left on me. We met during one of my first trips to the region of O Carballiño, in April 2022. The previous work allows me to orient myself, so I study maps, I prepare routes. Planning gives me a direction, but I like to move by following the decisions I make as I go along. The key to my photography, its successes or discoveries, have always come from intuition.
Following a road off the main road, I saw something that made me change course and start my search. I parked the car in a place where it was only possible to continue on foot, a small square in the middle of the village. When I got out of the car, I saw Delia standing at the entrance of her house, surprised by my appearance in a place where there are hardly any visitors.
Estuvimos hablando brevemente sobre cuáles eran nuestras razones para estar allí y fue ella quien, tras nuestra conversación, me sorprendió definitivamente invitándome a pasar a su casa porque, a pesar de no habernos visto nunca, me confesó que había algo en mi voz y en mi manera de hablar, que le resultaba familiar.
We talked briefly about our reasons for being there and it was she who, after our conversation, definitely surprised me by inviting me to her house because, although we had never met before, she confessed that there was something in my voice and in the way I spoke that sounded familiar to her.
En la cocina de su casa conocí a Aurelio, su marido, y con la disculpa de reponer fuerzas pasamos aquellas primeras horas hablando sobre nuestras propias historias. La suya había sido una vida dura, ambos habían emigrado a Francia, una historia de supervivencia y de heridas en las que nunca cicatrizó a tristeza de haber tenido que irse lejos dejando en España a sus propios hijos. Fue en aquel encuentro cuando los fotografié por primera vez.
In the kitchen of her house I met Aurelio, her husband, and with the excuse of regaining our strength we spent the first few hours talking about our own stories. Theirs had been a hard life, both had emigrated to France, a story of survival and of wounds in which the sadness of having had to go far away, leaving their own children in Spain, never healed. It was at that meeting that I photographed them for the first time.
Nos despedimos bien entrada la tarde con el deseo de volver a vernos algún día. Cuando un desconocido pasa a formar parte de tu propia historia, resulta más difícil aún transmitir ese proceso vital a través de una imagen. Disfrutar de este tipo de experiencias es el verdadero privilegio que aporta la fotografía.
We said goodbye well into the evening with the desire to meet again one day. When a stranger becomes part of your own story, it is even more difficult to convey that vital process through an image. Enjoying this kind of experience is the true privilege that photography brings.
Tenia claro que volvería a visitarlos la próxima vez que pasara cerca de su casa, algo que sucedió siete meses después, en el mes de octubre del año 2022. Nos reencontramos con la satisfacción de quien confirma que estaba en lo cierto. Ellos, de que yo volvería por allí. Yo, de que aquellas dos personas eran sin duda importantes para mí.
Volvimos a compartir mesa los tres en aquella cocina que ya me resultaba familiar, esta vez para comer juntos. Durante la comida continué conociendo sus historias, y fue al terminar cuando Aurelio me propuso salir a pasear y conocer su aldea. Delia por su parte prefirió quedarse en casa con sus tareas, y antes de irnos me confesó que confiaba en que a Aurelio le sentaría bien pasar tiempo conmigo. Estaba preocupada porque desde hacía un tiempo le había comenzado a fallar la memoria, y confiaba en que la idea de salir a pasear fuese un buen estímulo para él.
It was clear to him that he would visit them again the next time he passed near his home, which happened seven months later, in October 2022. We met again with the satisfaction of someone who confirms that he was right. They, that I would return that way. Me, that those two people were undoubtedly important to me.
The three of us shared a table again in that kitchen that was already familiar to me, this time to eat together. During the meal I continued to get to know their stories, and it was at the end of the meal that Aurelio suggested that we go for a walk and get to know his village. Delia, for her part, preferred to stay at home with her homework, and before we left she confessed to me that she was confident that it would be good for Aurelio to spend time with me. She was worried because his memory had been failing for some time, and she hoped that the idea of going for a walk would be a good stimulus for him.
Resulta emocionante recorrer junto a alguien los lugares importantes en los que ha crecido, escuchar los motivos que le llevaron a emigrar o los que le hicieron regresar con la firme decisión de terminar allí sus días. Durante nuestro paseo caminamos por un sendero rodeado de nogales que descendía hasta un río cercano, donde Aurelio no pudo evitar recordar entre lagrimas cómo se bañaba allí con sus amigos cuando solo era un niño. «¡Cuánto ha pasado ya desde aquel día, y qué lejos quedaba ya todo aquello!» .
It is exciting to walk with someone through the important places where he grew up, to listen to the reasons that led him to emigrate or those that made him return with the firm decision to end his days there. During our walk we walked along a path surrounded by walnut trees that descended to a nearby river, where Aurelio could not help remembering in tears how he used to bathe there with his friends when he was just a child. "How long has it been since that day, and how far away it all was!
Regresamos caminando por la parte alta de la aldea donde me contó la historia de cada uno de sus habitantes, de aquellas casas hoy ya vacías. Allí ya solo queda una vecina, una persona muy mayor que apenas sale de casa, por lo que la sensación de soledad es permanente durante todo el año.
We walked back through the upper part of the village where he told me the story of each of its inhabitants, of those houses that are now empty. There is only one neighbour left, a very old person who hardly ever leaves the house, so the feeling of loneliness is permanent all year round.
Casi un año después de aquella segunda visita, en septiembre el año 2023, nos vimos por tercera vez. Una tarde, al salir del trabajo, algo me hizo acordarme de ellos, por lo que marqué en el teléfono el numero de Delia. No sé si tendría mi numero guardado, pero me reconoció al instante. Para ella soy “el chico de la voz de buena persona”. Al preguntarle qué tal se encontraban, su respuesta me dejó frío. Aurelio había empeorado mucho en este ultimo año, empezaba a no reconocer por momentos a las personas. En la voz de Delia había mucha preocupación, algo que me hizo sentir ganas de verlos, y le dije que haría lo posible por visitarlos ese mismo fin de semana.
Salí de casa temprano, pero antes de llegar a su aldea aparqué el coche a un lado de la carretera, en un antiguo camino, y me quedé un rato esperando. Necesitaba prepararme para enfrentarme a aquel encuentro. Debido a su situación no sabía si Aurelio me reconocería o si sencillamente las cosas habrían cambiado tanto en un año como para que nada fuese como yo lo recordaba. Enseguida me sacó de mis pensamientos una llamada de Delia, una de esas situaciones difíciles de explicar. En ella me advertía que en el camino que bajaba a la aldea estaban realizando obras por lo convendría que dejase mi coche en la carretera principal. Para mí lo increíble de aquello fue que yo no le había confirmado que iría a visitarlos ese mismo día. Esa llamada significaba que ella sabía que lo haría.
Nada mas llegar nos saludamos, contaban con que comiese con ellos, pero le propuse a Aurelio salir a dar un paseo juntos. La única condición que nos puso Delia era que regresásemos puntuales para la hora de comer.
El camino que hicimos fue el mismo que en mi segunda visita. Recorrimos aquel sendero que baja hasta el río, pero no tardé en notar el cambio en Aurelio. Seguía siendo una persona de gran conversación, pero se le notaba muy cansado, tanto que sin llegar siquiera al río me dijo que no le apetecía seguir, que lo mejor sería regresar a casa. Durante el camino de vuelta Aurelio se detuvo delante de una higuera y con toda la paciencia del mundo estuvo seleccionando aquellos frutos que le parecían tener mejor aspecto para dármelos. Allí nos entretuvimos hasta que Delia salió a buscarnos. Era la hora de comer.
Almost a year after that second visit, in September 2023, we met for the third time. One afternoon, as I was leaving work, something reminded me of them, so I dialed Delia's number on the phone. I don't know if she had my number saved, but she recognised me instantly. To her I am "the guy with the nice voice". When I asked her how they were doing, her answer left me cold. Aurelio had worsened a lot in the last year, he was starting to not recognise people at times. There was a lot of concern in Delia's voice, something that made me want to see them, and I told her I would do my best to visit them that weekend.
I left home early, but before I reached their village I parked the car on the side of the road, on an old road, and waited for a while. I needed to prepare myself for the encounter. Because of his situation I didn't know if Aurelio would recognise me or if things had simply changed so much in a year that nothing was as I remembered it. I was immediately snapped out of my thoughts by a phone call from Delia, one of those situations that is hard to explain. She warned me that the road leading down to the village was being repaired and that I should leave my car on the main road. The amazing thing to me was that I had not confirmed that I would be visiting them that day. That call meant that she knew I would.
As soon as we arrived we greeted each other, they were expecting me to eat with them, but I suggested to Aurelio that we go for a walk together. Delia's only condition was that we had to be back on time for lunch.
The route we took was the same as on my second visit. We walked along the path down to the river, but it didn't take me long to notice the change in Aurelio. He was still a person of great conversation, but he seemed very tired, so much so that without even reaching the river he told me that he didn't feel like continuing, that it would be better to return home. On the way back, Aurelio stopped in front of a fig tree and with all the patience in the world he was selecting those fruits that he thought looked the best to give them to me. We stayed there until Delia came out to look for us. It was time to eat.
Aurelio apenas hablo durante la comida, y al terminar comentó que necesitaba retirarse a descansar. Ante aquella situación decidí salir yo solo a pasear por los alrededores del pueblo. Volver más tarde para estar un rato con ellos, o para simplemente despedirme, me pareció lo más correcto.
Bajé de nuevo hasta el río y recorrí sin prisa aquellos caminos que había descubierto con Aurelio durante nuestros paseos. Era emocionante explorar en soledad aquella zona tranquila del río, cubierta hoy de maleza, imaginando allí mismo a Aurelio y sus amigos disfrutando juntos de los juegos de la infancia en aquel paisaje.
Aurelio hardly spoke during the meal, and when he finished he said that he needed to retire to rest. Faced with this situation, I decided to go out on my own to walk around the village. Coming back later to spend some time with them, or just to say goodbye, seemed the right thing to do.
I went back down to the river and leisurely walked along the paths that I had discovered with Aurelio during our walks. It was exciting to explore in solitude that quiet area of the river, now overgrown with weeds, imagining Aurelio and his friends enjoying their childhood games together in that landscape.
Cuando regresé, Aurelio ya se había despertado. Mi intención antes de irme era visitar una iglesia cercana al pueblo en la que todavía no había estado, y él me dijo que, si íbamos en mi coche, iría conmigo. El camino que conduce a la iglesia era el mismo en el que yo me había detenido esa misma mañana antes de ir a verlos. En aquel mismo lugar volví a aparcar el coche.
Caminamos lentamente hasta la iglesia, y nos sentamos cerca de un camino que llevaba a un pequeño grupo de casas hoy también abandonadas. Mientras Aurelio me contaba la historia de aquel lugar, de las personas que allí había conocido, le hice una fotografía. Qué diferente lo veía de aquel hombre que había conocido en nuestro primer encuentro.
When I returned, Aurelio had already woken up. My intention before I left was to visit a church near the village that I had not yet been to, and he told me that, if we went in my car, he would go with me. The road leading to the church was the same one I had stopped on earlier that morning before going to see them. I parked the car again in the same spot.
We walked slowly to the church, and sat down near a road that led to a small group of now abandoned houses. While Aurelio told me the story of that place, of the people he had met there, I took a photograph of him. How different he looked from the man I had met at our first meeting.
Al regresar a casa nos encontramos a Delia sentada al sol, limpiando unas judías, y allí pasamos el resto del día disfrutando de una estupenda tarde de finales de verano.
When we returned home we found Delia sitting in the sun, cleaning some beans, and there we spent the rest of the day enjoying a lovely late summer afternoon.
Cuando llego el momento de irme, Aurelio me acompañó hasta el coche. Tanto él como yo somos personas habladoras, quizás poco expresivas en los afectos, pero nunca olvidaré la energía del momento en que me miró a los ojos y me dio la mano. Cuando se dio la vuelta y regresó caminando a su casa no pude evitar observarlo desde lo alto del camino.
Aquel gesto y su figura alejándose lentamente me emocionaron. No sé cuánto tiempo estuve parado dentro del coche hasta que finalmente arranqué y emprendí el camino de regreso a casa.
When it was time to leave, Aurelio walked me to the car. Both he and I are talkative people, perhaps not very expressive in our affections, but I will never forget the energy of the moment when he looked me in the eye and shook my hand. When he turned and walked back to his house I couldn't help but watch him from the top of the road.
That gesture and his figure slowly walking away touched me. I don't know how long I stood in the car before I finally started the car and made my way home.
